“What can we do…how can we help?”: Tsunami Relief Organizations

by gmacgilpin posted March 16, 2011 category News

While there will be small student groups asking our community to donate so we can give to Japan, some students and families have asked about organizations that have mobilized immediately to channel resources to help the victims in Japan. Country Day School does not vet out any of these organizations; however, the following are suggestions of well-known groups that are doing direct relief to Japan:

  • AMERICAN RED CROSS: Emergency Operation Centers are opened in the affected areas and staffed by the chapters. This disaster is on a scale larger than the Japanese Red Cross can typically manage. Donations to the American Red Cross can be allocated for the International Disaster Relief Fund, which then deploys to the region to help. Donate here.
  • AMERICARES:  Information is available on the organization’s Web site.
  • CARE: CARE is one of the world’s largest private international humanitarian organizations. Their offices in Asia are on high alert and have ensured that staff are informed of the tsunami warnings and other related developments. Read more.
  • DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS: Information is available on the organization’s Web site. Their statement about funding is here.
  • GLOBALGIVING: Established a fund to disburse donations to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Donate here.
  • INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS: Information is available on the organization’s Web site.
  • SAVE THE CHILDREN: Mobilizing to provide immediate humanitarian relief in the shape of emergency health care and provision of non-food items and shelter. Donate here.
  • SALVATION ARMY: The Salvation Army has been in Japan since 1895 and is currently providing emergency assistance to those in need. Donate here.
  • AMERICARES: Emergency team is on full alert, mobilizing resources and dispatching an emergency response manager to the region. Donate here.
  • CONVOY OF HOPE: Disaster Response team established connection with in-country partners who have been impacted by the damage and are identifying the needs and areas where Convoy of Hope may be of the greatest assistance. Donate here.

For Japan Relief t-shirts

As always, check your place of donation before doing so. Guidestar.org is a reliable website for non-profit organizations. Over the past few days a number of websites and media have reported that there are faulty organizations asking for Japan relief.

CDS will take its donations and collect them through its CDS Flood Fund, where money will be earmarked for Red Cross relief in Japan or through organizations recommended by the Japanese Embassy. This Sunday, the Japanese Embassy is also hosting a day of cultural activities to raise funds.  See Día Arigato: Ticos por Japón. In addition, a group of CDS students has already designed and ordered t-shirts to sell.

I know a community such as ours can help many in Japan in this time of crisis.
